New seven story 300,000 gsf mixed-use structure with 231 apartments (19 affordable), a 44,000 gsf Anthony Bowen YMCA facility, and 12,000 gsf retail shell space. The facades of the historic structures on 14th Street were preserved. The renovation and restoration of selected townhouse buildings and the carriage house was completed. The remaining structures, along with below-grade structures, were demolished in order to create a two-and-a-half story, below-grade parking garage with 171 spaces. Project is seeking LEED Gold certification.
Founded in 1853, YMCA Anthony Bowen was the first African-American YMCA established in the world. YMCA Anthony Bowen was reorganized as a branch of the YMCA of the City of Washington in 1905. The Twelfth Street Banch of the YMCA was developed and opened in 1912. In 1982, after 70 years, the facility moved and reopened at 1325 W Street. The YMCA Anthony Bowen now sits at its new home at 14th & W Streets.
